Do I have to file a sales tax return in every state I do business in?

Yes. If you are selling any tangible product or service that requires sales tax to be added.

If I sell products in a state where my customers are tax exempt, do I have to register with the Department of Revenue?

Majority of states require you to file a sales tax exemption registration.

Are we required to be certified in a state if we are providing telecommunications service?

For a long distance provider (IXC), you are required to have a certification in most states. For a local provider (CLEC), you are required to have a certification in all states plus DC. Services such as VoIP and data provider are required to have a certification is certain states, but not all.

If I am doing business in a state, do I need to register with the Secretary of State?

If you have employees or an office within the state, you are requested to file with the secretary of state. Utility companies are required to file with every secretary of state in whom you have customers.

How many returns are filed on an annual basis in order to keep our State Certifications is good standing?

There are over a 1000 returns, which are either filed, monthly, bi-monthly, semi-annual, annual or biennial. Depending on your certifications, you may have to file over 2,000 returns annually.
